Defining
Genocide
As long as it
isn't called genocide, nothing has to be done
Sudan's government and pro-government Arab militias have
been accused by human rights groups of carrying out genocide
against black African residents of the Darfur region.
The militia
groups, known as the Janjaweed, are accused of forcing some
two million people from their homes and killing thousands.
The United States has also used the term genocide, but a
United Nations investigation has stopped short of describing
the violence in Darfur as genocide.
It concluded that the Sudanese government and allied
militias had committed war crimes against the civilian
population.
If they had used the term genocide then it should carry a
legal obligation to act.
